What is Ayurveda ?

Ayurveda translates from Sanskrit to ‘Knowledge of life’ (ayur=life, veda=knowledge or science)

It is recognized as the oldest form of written medicine. The ancient science of Ayurveda originated over 5,000 years ago in India and continues to be practiced today.

Ayurveda is designed as a healing system , preventitive medicine and as a lifestyle. It  gives you the tools you need to understand the root of your imbalance and find long lasting solutions and lifestyle changes to live in connection with the seasons and your own nature.

Ayurvedic principles hold that the body is composed of a unique combination of three Doshas., your unique physical, psychological and emotional constitution that determines who you are, your personality and your tendancies.

Your Unique Dosha Makeup - based on the principles of the five elements:

Water, Air, Fire, Ether and Earth

Each person has their unique combination. There are three Doshas; Vata, Pitta and Kapha. According to the Ayurvedic principles you are predominantly one dosha, but a combination of all in different ratios. We all have a unique makeup, no two individuals are alike. By learning how the Doshas manifest in the body, our emotions and tendencies, we learn how to make daily lifestyle choices to keep them balanced. There is no perfect combination; all doshas have their strengths and weaknesses. The goal is to find balance.

  • Vata

Vata – Air and Ether/Space (governs movement)

Vata individuals tend to be generally physically thin and light, with dry skin, they are energetic and mentally restless. In balance, they are charming, sociable, energetic and enthusiastic about life. Extreme imbalance may result in anything from nervous system problems, hyperactivity, insomnia, emaciation, joint pain and chronic fatigue.

  • Pitta

Pitta – Fire and Water (governs metabolic processes)

Pitta individuals are medium height and tend to develop good muscular tone, with soft skin that burns easily in the sun. Pitta constitution is often associated with people who are opinionated with sharp concentration and intense digestion. When imbalanced, it can manifest into irritability and excessive anger, heartburn, inflammation, rheumatoid arthritis and ulcers. They are sensitive to the sun and prefer cool weather, like autumn.

  • Kapha

Kapha – Water and Earth (governs immunity)

Kapha individuals tend to be more voluptuous, with a beautiful thick hydrated skin that ages well. When in balance, individuals with strong Kapha tend to be physically strong and emotionally calm and patient. They don’t talk much but are deep thinkers. Imbalance can bring lethargy, insecurity and even depression as well as a tendency to be overweight.
